My Department Head invited me to become a member of his exclusive hunting club. Most of the members were professors and business people who were totally obsessed with guns.
Their collections consisted of thousands of dollars worth of guns which filled multiple gun safes. They were very generous with their ammo and encouraged me to spend a lot of time practicing at our private range.
Several of our members were retired military and some were special forces. They taught me how to shoot equally well with either hand.
I spent several years being trained by an American Sniper. We went to the range every week to blow holes in cardboard. He taught me how to drill a gnat from 100 yards with an AR-15.
After completing some NRA courses I assisted as a range instructor during classes sponsored by our hunting club and got my concealed carry permit.
I love to go hiking in the mountains alone, so I carry a 40 caliber Beretta in my left holster and a Sig Sauer in the right. There are bears, cougars, coyotes, and other wild creatures in the woods.
Occasionally I come across other humans. I wear blaze orange and sometimes walk past hunters during hunting season. I live in the country so I hardly notice the sound of gunfire from neighbors who are target practicing.
The only creature I ever killed was a groundhog with rabies, who was attempting to attack me. I felt so bad that I dug a grave and gave him a funeral. R.I.P. Phil.
In addition to basic pistol training, I completed an NRA personal defense course as well as a course to become certified as an NRA instructor. One of my mentors in our hunting club asked me to assist her at the range during classes. She became my client as well. I built her website and wrote the copy to promote her NRA certified courses.
I have no affiliation with the N.R.A. and I am an advocate for gun safety measures, particularly background checks. I believe everyone who possesses a gun should be properly trained about how to safely use it
The gentleman pictured above was a homicide detective who investigated a mass shooting. I learned about active shooters from him, and from the mass murder at Virginia Tech, in Blacksburg, Virginia. No community should ever experience anything this devastating and tragic.
